Mundtot - Endzeit EP

With their EP “Endzeit” a few rebellious young musicians, calling themselves ‘mundtot’ – present a debut that really shows some of the old hands in the gothic scene what’s what.

That the roots of the Munich-based trio comes from post-punk and new wave is really unmistakable. Likewise, they mix elegiac wavy guitars with synthpop-hooks and aggressive punk-rhythms with pounding industrial elements.

In which they are indifferent building on the roots of a music – that hardly anyone knows today – expanding this with modern Industrial-Gothrock, they create an exciting, raw, uncut and rebellious music. The vocals move smart on the line between accusatory sadness and aggressive rebellion.

For ‘mundtot’ are mainly corporate and time-critical. They have something to say.

Their anger means power, energy and creativity. In a time where some people have long since resigned or just use their aggression to scare little girls, ‘mundtot’ brings back some rebellious fresh air into the scene. Perhaps a privilege of youth? In any case, damn catchy and awesome.

Hello John, How's The Leg?

This is a rewrite of an old song I had back in the days when I used to do solo gigs in Alexander's (Almost a Legend) in Fermoy. I was walking with my dad to the soccer pitch in Fermoy when we met a player who had been injured the previous week. "Hello John, how's the leg?" says me dad. "Ride me sideways" thought I, "that would make a great name for a song!!!".

Anyway, the lyrics:

You have to wear a cast till Christmas
Walk around on crutches all day
Hello John, how's the leg?
A dirty little scut from Mayfield
Kicked you in the side of the knee
Hello John, how's the leg?

Nothing to do all day
But drink all your sick pay
On the bar stool you'll stay
Until you've an arse like the Bay of Biscay
Until you've an arse like the Bay of Biscay
Biscay

Develop spinal complications
To try to give the Compo a boost
Hello John, how's the leg?
Langers on a Tuesday morning
What will all the good townsfolk say?
Hello John, how's the leg?

With nothing to do all day
But drink all your sick pay
On the bar stool you'll stay
Until you've an arse like the Bay of Biscay
Until you've an arse like the Bay of Biscay
Biscay

Hello John, how's the leg? etc...

I had a dream a couple years ago where I encountered the largest tree I had ever seen, possibly 5,000 years old. There was a door on the front of the trunk, and being curious, I opened it and entered the tree. Down, down, down: stairs spiraled down the trunk, taking me deep into the ground. There was a murmuring roar growing louder and louder, and a red/orange glow coming from wherever the stairs ended.

Eventually I came to the end. And the beginning. The stairs opened up to a large room, filled with sweaty, dancing tribal people. In the distance was a fire that lit the entire room, and next to the fire, a stage. On the stage were more tribal folk, in masks...with electric guitars. And drums. Everything seemed to be being amplified through the trunk of the tree, which extended up and up. There was a certain kind of warm, magic, electric energy that filled the place. Sooner or later, I woke up.

At the end of that summer, a good friend of mine living in Seattle invited me to come record music with him. Perfect, I thought, perhaps I could make a record about/by the ELECTRITRIBE. The only problem was that I lived in Virginia, had no job, and had barely enough to get by/squat (let alone travel).

Around the same time, another friend called me and invited me to ride trains with him. Where to? I asked. Anywhere, he replied.

So there I was, on the back of a CSX freight train headed to Seattle, about to make a record about an imaginary, magic tribe that played rock n roll.

I can still vividly remember us racing through the trees, plains, and over the rivers/lakes of rural America, sometimes getting up to 90 mph (esp. after dropping off cargo), standing at the edge of the train, screaming the chorus of "Like a Rolling Stone" with everything we had.

We got as far as Des Moines, Iowa when a local out in the corn fields saw my friend pissing off the side of the train. Next thing we knew, we were in a holding cell. It was at that point we decided to start hitchhiking. So after getting out, we made a few signs, stuck our thumbs up, and got ourselves out of I.O.W.A. (I Oughta Went Around, some call it).

We travelled that way for a few days through the North Midwest, mainly hitching rides from truckers at various T/As, then eventually split up and went our separate ways. My friend was headed to California and I to Seattle.

It was around this time that I came to Butte, Montana: A small mining town surrounded by mountains. It's hard to explain what really happened there, but there are two things I know for sure: there was no way out, and the whole town could read my mind. I was stuck there for about a week, and was literally going insane. I eventually found a homeless shelter, got some rest, and decided to call home.

To make a long story short, I didn't make it to Seattle that August of 2008. A little over a year later, I began recording some songs at Earthsound Studios in Chesapeake, VA.

COLOR : ELECTRITRIBE is the product of these sessions.

I sincerely hope you enjoy the music and experience of the ELECTRITRIBE.

M31 - Infected Dreans

When a Jamie Stewart produced musician recommends a band to you, then it is certainly worth investigating - even more so, when M31 list Spaceman 3, Nirvana, Silver Apples and ... Mazzy Star as their influences.

M31 were formed in July 2009, when the final piece of the jigsaw was found via a Craigslist ad. The culmination of these likeminded individuals has led to a ceaseless list of shows, with a SXSW appearance in the not too distant future.

Musically M31 wear their hearts on their sleeves, they make loud noisy music - aggressive psychedelia with callous punk spitting down the microphone. Rollins type barks shoot out from a barrage of beats, and vivid guitar strikes.

"Infected Dreams" is a powerful release, raw when it needs to be, but always controlled and purposeful. It is not one that will rock you to sleep at night, but certainly one to kick you up the ass.
